The Oklahoma Commission on the Status of Women held the 2008 Kate Barnard Luncheon at the State Capitol yesterday. Commission Chair Chris Morriss opened the ceremonies and welcomed special guests. Kate Barnard (portrayed by Glenda Carlile) talked about her life and compared conditions and opportunities for women at the time of statehood to the present. Retired Southwestern Oklahoma State University president Dr. Joe Anna Hibler gave the keynote address. Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner Kim Holland received the 2008 Kate Barnard Award which is given to a state elected or appointed official who has shown service to women, children and families in the spirit of Kate Barnard. Shown left to right are State Representative Anastasia Pittman, author/performer Glenda Carlile, Kim Holland, Dr. Joe Anna Hibler, Senator Debbe Leftwich, and Chris Morriss). Other state women leaders present included Supreme Court Justice Yvonne Kauger, Representative Lisa Billy, Representative Lee Denney, Representative Skye McNiel, Secretary of State Susan Savage and recently retired (and back in Oklahoma, yeah!) General Rita Aragon. My apologies to others I know I'm failing to mention and hats off to the legislators who came because there were numerous House and Senate meetings scheduled at the same time. In addition to special guests, Commission members and members of the Advisory Council to the Commission were present. The event was organized by the Commission's Leadership Committee which is chaired by Lou Kohlman.
